It all started when ... A friend said they needed another woman on the trip. I'd been to Honduras before so I had some experience. I was hesitant at first - the timing wasn't ideal but I felt the tug on my heart to go so I said "yes!"
I enjoyed getting to know ... Kate Mangels, our trip coordinator who joined us for this trip, and our in-country staff - Jaime and Byron and Jaime's wife and daughters. I also enjoyed getting to know the members of the community - so warm and welcoming and eager to make us comfortable outside our comfort zones. So gracious!
Things that challenged and changed me ... Drilling two wells and teaching hygiene lessons and bible stories twice in one week was a challenge but one we met with enthusiasm and determination. I learned that I was a pretty good actor for the skits and that I could interact well with the children, especially with my camera! And that I could love someone I didn't know and couldn't communicate very well with.....the people of the communities touched my heart and soul.
I will never forget ... When the truck and rig got stuck in the incredibly deep loose dirt of the second community and the people of the community pulling the truck and rig out of the dirt with ropes attached to the front and pushing the truck from behind. What an incredible ingenuity they exhibited and teamwork like I've never seen before - they were one unit working to achieve the goal of getting that rig into place so we could drill them a well and bring them fresh, clean water! So inspiring! I was so awe-struck that I never even lifted my camera for a picture!
