Hope Restored for Generations to Follow

"I thought I would be dead before this community had clean water," FanFan Lucian said.

Now that FanFan's village has access to safe water, he no longer has to worry about the future of generations to come. Clean water secures a path for hope. Witnessing his community's transformation is a legacy FanFan can hand down to the family he struggled to provide for.

Mothers in the community equate the pain of helplessly witnessing a little one's illness to the heartbreak of delivering a stillborn child.

"When a child is sick, it feels like you've carried your baby full-term, but can't deliver it.," Philonise said. "The pain is in the bottom of your heart."

Janet Michelle leads the children in songs at the village church. She said now, with safe water, mothers can feel good again, knowing their babies have less chance of contracting water-borne diseases.

Other parents have seen clean water revoke the misconceived power of voodoo curses. Jean Peter, a local water committee member, said families used to think kids' swollen bellies were the product of bad spiritual practices. But now that the community can drink safe water, they see the true origin of the ailments. Now they're free from fear.

Felix can't wipe the smile off his face because he knows he's healthy.

"I used to be skinny, but now I'm a big man," Felix said. "And I'll always be a big man because I drink clean water."

Felix's small frame may never be as imposing as he suggests, but with new access to safe water, Felix has even more than health. He has hope.
