It all started when ... I signed up because I had wanted to travel internationally and I had never been on a foreign missions trip. After a year or so of being on Liquid's waiting list for a clean water trip, I was selected for the August trip. I knew this was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I feel like God confirmed that I could go on the trip because I was available to go and I received a generous scholarship from my church (liquidchurch.com) to go on the mission.
I enjoyed getting to know ... The people on my team (none of us had really known each other prior to leaving), the Living Water staff, and the community of La Zieva, who welcomed us very genuinely. Our team really bonded over the week and I loved being with the people of the community, especially the children.
Things that challenged and changed me ... The poverty of the community members (at least in the material sense) and their joy really challenged me. In the U.S. we have so many luxuries that we have become accustomed to, things that we rarely think about, such as running water/plumbing, electricity, an abundance of food, and many others which people in other parts of the world do not have. Yet most of the people we met were filled with joy, "having nothing, and yet possessing everything." (2 Corinthians 6:10b)
I will never forget ... The people of La Zeiva. They are truly amazing. They gave me far more than I could ever give them.
