Empowering Haitians to Heal Haitians
Water remains among Haiti’s most desperate post-earthquake needs. Before the earthquake even struck, we trained teams of Haitians to address their country’s water needs by quickly restoring water to entire villages. In response to the earthquake, we modified our Haiti operations to reach more people more quickly, drastically increasing our 2010 goal to 500 projects. With your help, our teams can restore water to thousands of people per day.
“In most of Haiti,” says Living Water Haiti Director, Jim Mohney, “borehole wells with hand pumps are the primary source of clean water, but thousands of them have been left in disrepair, forcing people to drink from contaminated rivers and hand-dug wells.”
Cost-Effective, Long-Term Solutions
Well rehabilitation is the fastest, simplest, most cost-effective way to provide long-term water solutions in Haiti. The water trucks and bottled water handouts of the disaster response organizations were necessary for a time, but they don’t last. Now is the time for what we do best.
