Meet Sofia. She’s a deacon in the Full Gospel Church here in Sharakwe. Sofia found us while we were drilling a well at another church in a nearby village. She came to us pleading for help. “Without clean water, our children and our herds are dying,” she told us. Children in Sharakwe Village were suffering from cholera, dysentery, and typhoid because of the dirty water they had to drink. “Our cattle and goats get sick from the bad water. Without our cattle and goats, we have no income to provide for our children.”
We explained to Sofia that we understood her situation, but the waiting list for people wanting wells was long. But Sofia was persistent. Her desperate tears led us to change our agenda for the week, and we headed to Sharakwe to drill a well.
As clean water flowed from the new pump, Sofia was close by, watching. Kids gathered around the well, shouting and smiling, running their hands under the clear, cool water. With a smile of her own, Sofia thanked us saying, “Now, we have clean water. Now, we have life.”
