Five Wells for Zing

by Susanna Donald

NIGERIA – Zing Community, Taraba State,
GPS: 08 56.864 N, 011 52.180 W.
Number of villages: 5.
Number of people in each village: 5,000.
Number of pumps providing clean water to these villages: 0.

Those were the statistics for Zing, a region along the eastern edge of Nigeria, before LWI went to work there at the end of 2008. Oh, and the 5,000 people in each village? Those are only the non-migrant inhabitants. During the dry season, the population for each village can surge well about 20,000 as thousands of nomadic Fulanis come in search of water. Any water. The Zing villages were home to the only water sources for many miles, even if those water sources were filthy and contaminated.

LWI worked with the Relief Network Ministries and the Methodist Church in Nigeria to locate the best sites for the wells. Now, there are five new wells in Zing, providing clean, safe water for thousands and thousands of people each day. The five-well project in Zing was funded by LWI and The Valley Springs Presbyterian Church in California. Because of partnerships like these, many other communities like Zing will be able to experience the love of Christ through the incredible gift of safe drinking water.
